I was really excited for this month's theme day, as I finally get a chance to show how wonderful large power transformers can be! My husband works in a factory that produces equipment for these transformers which are essential to utility companies. In fact, I used to sell this stuff when we were back in Jackson and I find a kind of beauty in it.
I won't bore you with more details on what these porcelain friends do, but suffice to say they are important for the proper functioning of a utility's transformer. If you'd like to see more interpretations of electricity from around the world, take a look at the CDP theme day page.

on dirait des petits robots ;)
This is such a fun shot Halcyon, they look like a row of little ceramic robots. It's a wonderful shot for the theme today.
Although quite late, congratulations for your first year with the Daily Photo Community. Your blog is a reference for me and one of my favorites.
I agree there's a certain beauty here. :)
They look impressive, if a little old school ;-)
These insulators are huge and really amazing!
I retired from the local pulp and paper mill as an electrician. I've worked on power transformers.
These guys do seem to have a personality, Halcyon. Electricity has given you and me both a good living. (They still aren't very good looking . . . )
Theres' some serious electrical power here. And it looks up-to-date.
These a great insulators - they do look like little robots!
Beautiful and interesting image for this theme day!
On dirait plein de p'tits bonhommes !
This is a superb post for the theme! And your commentary was most interesting. Many years ago when our son was young, he would dig in creek banks in Pennsylvania where we lived and would dig up some wonderful things like old jugs, medicine bottles, etc., and old transformers - the kind you'd see on telephone polls.
What a striking image. Well composed and balanced!
Porcelain hangs around electricity a lot.
@VP & RedPat - these are bushings, not insulators. Although I wouldn't expect people to know the difference. These are 34.5kv models, actually not that big. But they connect transformers to the lines. The little things on the top are expansion tanks in case the oil inside gets too hot, it has somewhere to go without causing an explosion.
@Birdman - actually a lot of bushings are now made of polymer. But the factory here in Toronto doesn't have the technology to make those yet.
Nice one for theme day! Love that depth of field -- well done.
I thought that first one looked like a robot. Great shot.
That's a wonderful close up shot!
Perfect picture for the theme and I like a lot the perspective in this picture!

You are very creative for this theme day. I love your passion for something you find interesting. These little porcelain thingies , whatever they are, look like tiny Martians to me!

I hate the new word verification. Since I have trouble reading those "words", I am assuming others do too.
