In order to get power for the mill, you need a dam. The Hope Mill is run with a Francis turbine which requires the water to flow into it from a higher elevation. It's all very technical, but our guide (and my engineer husband) was very good at explaining it all.

Where's the dam guide? Any dam questions? hahahaha Couldn't resist.
Dams have a purpose indeed.
Love the clouds. It really is interesting how this all ties in together.
I'm glad someone can explain stuff like this. I'm just a mere photographer. Beautiful shot, Hal! And by the way, ignore Birdman, he always thinks he's so dam funny! :-)
Impressionnant. J'adore la photo d'hier, en noir et blanc c'est superbe.
All around New England, there are cities -- Holyoke, Lowell, Manchester, etc. -- that grew up in the 1800s because the local businessmen harnessed water power for their factories.
Well, I'll be damed; both Birdman and Jacob got here first with their dam jokes. I agree with Randy that the clouds are terrific...first thing I noticed.
I think you chose a beautiful day to see the dam and mill.

I hate the new word verification. Since I have trouble reading those "words", I am assuming others do too.
